End of piracy?

Recently, Wolfire games have come up with a new sales model for their games. Pay as much as you want and download as much as you like. The idea is quite novel and as they mention here, it is based on sound reasoning. Whether it will bring an end to piracy or not, remains to be seen but, ah well, how do you pirate something available to you for free?
Strangely, I was discussing this bit with my roommate today and he was adamant this can never work because if I can get a free lunch, I wouldn't pay for it, would I? But then, Gurudwaras have langars. Who funds those? I think people like these. The result is there for everyone to see.
Do the other game developers feel threatened? I hope so. :)

Even though pay-as-much-as-you-want for great games like Penumbra and WoG is great deal for gamers, it is not a sales model for indie game developers for new releases. All of the games in the Humble bundle are very old (~2-5 years) and sales were almost nil. So selling them for pay-as-much-as-you-want not only allows the developers to milk their products a little more, but it also generates interest in their new products. Wolfire is about to launch Overgrowth soon; Frictional games, the developers for Penumbra, have a new game Amnesia available for pre-order.

Yes, you are right. Still this opens a door for similar sales model. I am sure they would have used this as an experiment to see the reaction from gamers. Hoping they will use it again and on new games.

Check out http://www.onlive.com/ I had pre-registered so I am getting free membership for 1 year plus a free game of my choice! I'll review it as soon as I get some time for gaming. :)

1. The Humble Bundle is back, with 5 kick-ass games. You might want to get it from here for Machinarium alone.

2. Just received my closed beta key for Battlefield Play4Free :)

So much to do, so little time...
